Minecraft’s first version was created in a remarkably short period of time. Markus Persson wanted to make a sandbox that would allow players to explore virtual worlds freely. 

On May 10th, 2009, he began working on the game that is now called Minecraft. He continued to improve it until May 16th. One day later, the alpha version of the game was released to the public.


Two years after its initial release, the team at Mojang still felt that the game was not complete. The team at Mojang continued to update and refine the game after its release on PC. 

They did this until they felt it had reached its maximum potential. The official completion of Minecraft was on November 18, 2011.


The game wasn’t called “Minecraft” from the beginning. It was called the “Cave Game” by its creator during the early stages. The name “Cave Game” was quickly changed to “Order of the Stone.” It was then reduced to what it is now.


It was inspired by many other games. Markus Persson credits several PC games as primary influences on Minecraft, including Dwarf Fortress and Dungeon Keeper. Infiniminer was his favorite game. He wanted to combine its appealing aesthetics with RPG-style gameplay.


A coding error led to the creation of the infamous creeper. The game’s designer was originally trying to create a character that looked like a pig but accidentally mixed the values for height and length in the code. It is a menacing, electrifying creature that was created as a result of this error
