In a news release, Strong highlighted the impact of each inductee. Barbie Fashion Designer, a CD-ROM game by Digital Domain and Mattel Media, played a significant role in proving a market for games aimed at girls.

Kristy Hisert, the collections manager, said the game served as a catalyst for the girls’ games movement and prompted critical discussions about the implications of gendering games.

The Last of Us, a Naughty Dog creation, earned praise for its immersive storytelling, captivating characters, and adrenaline-pumping gameplay. Video game curator Lindsey Kurano emphasized its enduring popularity due to the strength of its story and gameplay quality.

Wii Sports, a Nintendo game, revolutionized gaming by tapping into a previously unexplored market. Aryol Prater, the research specialist for Black play and culture, highlighted how Wii Sports turned millions of people worldwide into gamers, with stories of diverse groups, including seniors, enjoying virtual bowling, tennis, and more.

Lastly, Computer Space, a title inspired by previous inductee Spacewar, pioneered the commercial video game industry and is also featured in the Video Game Hall of Fame 2023. Jeremy Saucier, assistant vice president for interpretation and electronic games, acknowledged that while Computer Space didn’t popularize video games, it proved they could reach paying audiences and laid the groundwork for the industry.

These four games join the ranks of 36 previous inductees in the Video Game Hall of Fame 2023, including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Ms. Pac-Man, Sid Meier’s Civilization, and Dance Dance Revolution, in the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
